The region itself has been an key player in the history of the Hunter, providing a resting place for travelers since the early 1800’s as well as playing an important role in the opening up of the Great North Road. This road was one of the most ambitious and colourful episodes in the history of convict labour in Australia Even today the main park in Broke has given up coins dating back to 1790 – the park was a camping site for many years. The Dairy Cottage had been a dairy since the early 1930’s when the region was known for it’s numerous small dairying farms – many of these survived to the late 1970’s The Broke Fordwich Region has been producing quality wines since the late 1800’s . In recent years, with the sealing of roads into the area, the region is being re-discovered and recognised not only for it’s superb wines but it’s interesting landscape.
